Snowdrop Spotting at Drumlanrig Castle Gardens

Snowdrop Display at Drumlanrig Castle

  • Castle Gardens open Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th March for the first Snowdrop Walk Weekend
  • Enjoy snowdrops and other signs of Spring

Visitors to Drumlanrig Castle Gardens – the Dumfriesshire home of the Duke of Buccleuch – can enjoy a beautiful display of snowdrops on the weekend of Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th March.

The vast Gardens, which will be open between 11am and 3pm, will have a specially designed way-marked walk through the Winter Gardens and across the Marr Burn. It is the first time the Gardens have been open to visitors for the Snowdrop display.

Head gardener, Robbie Black, said: “The snowdrops at Drumlanrig were all planted in the last 25 years with the help of our Castle Garden volunteers and we can’t wait to share them with visitors.

“Look out for snowflakes, Galanthus nivalis, the common snowdrop, and some more unique varieties including Galanthus nivalis viridapice with its distinctive green tips; Galanthus nivalis flore pleno, which has double white flowers; and Galanthus elwesii, a larger snowdrop also known as ‘greater snowdrop’. “

In addition to the way-marked walk, visitors are welcome to explore the wider Gardens which boast some of the oldest Douglas firs in Scotland, historic Summer Houses, and Heather Houses, and even a tree planted by astronaut Neil Armstrong.

Plants will also be available to buy on the day, many grown at Drumlanrig. The Larchwood Cabin Café will also be open with hot and cold drinks and homemade traybakes for visitors to enjoy.

Tickets costing £6 per person can be purchased in advance at www.drumlanrigcastle.co.uk/event/snowdrop-walk/. Dogs, on leads, are very welcome. The Adventure Playground will be closed, re-opening on 1st April.
